Solid Jatobá slat boards, the deep red hardwood that defined exotic flooring in America, now milled with tongue-and-groove edges for walls and ceilings.
Jatobá grows from southern Mexico and the Caribbean to the Amazon. In the 1990s and 2000s it became the best-selling exotic hardwood floor in the United States under the name Brazilian Cherry, so millions of American homes already know its color. The tree produces copal, a resin once used in fine varnishes, and a pod whose sweet pulp is a local delicacy. The wood is exceptionally stiff and strong, with a Janka rating of 2,690 lbf, and its orange-brown heartwood darkens to a rich burgundy with light.
